Sparkling water maker

An appliance that turns tap water into sparkling water. You may know it as SodaStream.

Tap water in the bottle, press a few times, and it fizzes. You no longer carry packs of bottles from the car into your home or take empties back. One gas cylinder lasts for about 40 to 60 litres.

My recommendation Grohe Blue Fizz Price range: Premium
Cold fizzes better

Cold water absorbs the carbon dioxide much better. Put the filled bottle in the fridge for a while before carbonating, and it will fizz more strongly.

What it takes off your hands

How much effort you save
Before
With a sparkling water maker
Cheap water from the supermarket
  • Carrying packs or crates to the car and into your home
  • Collecting empties and taking them back
  • Space for the stock in the kitchen or cellar
With a sparkling water maker
  • Tap water into the bottle, press a few times
  • Swap the cylinder about every 11 weeks
  • No crates, no empties
Right for you if …
  • You drink a lot of sparkling water and carry packs or crates of it home
  • You live without a lift or shop without a car
  • You want fewer plastic bottles and fewer empties
To be honest
  • If you currently buy cheap supermarket own-brand water, you hardly save money. It really pays off compared with branded water
  • You hardly save time, because instead of carrying, you carbonate every bottle yourself. What you save is the effort
  • You have to swap empty gas cylinders regularly, about every 40 to 60 litres
  • Plastic bottles usually can't go in the dishwasher and have to be replaced by the date printed on them

Grohe Blue Fizz

  • Test winner at Stiftung Warentest (good, grade 1.7, issue 7/2025)
  • Fizzes the most strongly in the test, almost like sparkling water from the shop
  • Three levels from gentle to strong, set with a dial
  • Takes screw-in cylinders from many brands, not just Grohe's

For most people, especially if you like it really fizzy. My tip, because it's the test winner.

To be honest

Strong fizz needs more gas, so the cylinder runs out sooner. You wash the plastic bottle by hand. Stiftung Warentest found the handling only satisfactory. The more expensive “Advanced” version also shows how full the cylinder still is.

Questions and answers

Do I save money with it?

A lot compared with branded water, hardly anything compared with cheap supermarket water. When you make it yourself, you mainly pay for the gas, about 10 to 20 cents per litre depending on the cylinder and machine. In Germany, cheap sparkling water costs around 20 cents per litre, branded water often 60 cents or more. But the real gain is this: you don't carry anything any more. The calculator shows how much it makes for you.

Can I just use tap water?

Yes. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland drinking water is one of the most strictly controlled foods, and its quality is good to very good. If the water has been standing in the pipes for more than four hours, for example overnight, let it run until it comes out of the tap noticeably cooler. That's what the German Environment Agency advises. How good it is where you live, your water supplier can tell you.

Glass bottle or plastic?

Glass can go in the dishwasher, doesn't age and tastes neutral. You use it as long as it has no cracks or chips. Plastic is more robust, but usually may only be washed by hand. Every plastic bottle has a date printed on it by which you have to replace it, because the material ages. That's what Stiftung Warentest says.

Where do I swap empty cylinders?

You hand in the empty cylinder at a shop and only pay for the new filling. You can swap empty SodaStream cylinders at many retailers that sell SodaStream. The retailer search on the SodaStream website shows you where. For machines with a screw thread like the Grohe Blue Fizz there are also swap cylinders from other providers, often cheaper. But watch out: some shops only swap their own brand.

Which cylinder fits my machine?

There are two fittings. You screw in screw-in cylinders; the pink Quick Connect cylinders just click in. New SodaStream machines like the Crystal 3.0 need Quick Connect. The Grohe Blue Fizz takes screw-in cylinders, including from other brands, but no Quick Connect cylinders. Check the packaging when you buy.

How long does a cylinder last?

In the Stiftung Warentest test the machines made 37 to 61 litres with one cylinder. How much it is for you depends on the machine and on how strongly you carbonate: the more fizz, the sooner the cylinder is empty.

How do I keep everything clean?

Clean the nozzle regularly, otherwise slime-forming bacteria can settle there. Stiftung Warentest also advises pouring the sparkling water into a glass or a carafe to drink it, instead of drinking from the carbonating bottle. You just wipe the machine itself with a damp cloth; it doesn't belong in the dishwasher.

Why isn't the Aarke included?

The stainless steel Aarke Carbonator 3 looks stylish and was also good at Stiftung Warentest (issue 7/2025). But it scored worse than the Grohe Blue Fizz and costs considerably more.
